Discovering Hong Kong One Dumpling at a Time.

Cartoon me

My name is Mirna and I am, you guessed it, a very tall Croatian girl that just moved to Hong Kong. This is my attempt to share the amazement, wonder and pure bewilderment I experience in every day life.

Cantonese lesson 1

Cantonese lesson 1

In my Cantonese class this morning we were learning how to make a simple sentence. When it came to me to name an animal I don’t like I just couldn’t think of any so I said cockroach. If you have seen them in Hong Kong you would know why. They are the size of a well fed mouse and they are everywhere! The teacher wrote the Cantonese word for them on the blackboard - gaaht jaat, and proceeded to use it in an sentence,

- “Heung Gong gaaht jaat FEI.”

She looked at me to see if I understood and, just in case, made a little flying gesture with her hands. That’s one word I will never forget.
